This was an advice I gave to a friend, I thought it's worthy of an entry here...

Friends seem to erode with time, just like statues and cliffs. We grow older, we start seeing through the lies, we start getting too busy with life and we just move on. You can make real friends from your children as they grow, from your husband, and family. Those last way longer than people we often think of as friends.

We're all slaves. Men and women are slaves of this life. We all try to rebel at times, we try to deny, we try to sugar coat things, but the bitter taste cuts straight through the sweet outer shell... We're slaves of our culture, the bank, and the family, the job, the choices, our own insecurities and our own invisible disabilities. They will drain us till the last day of your life...

Friends also enslave us, only at the very worst moment, they will demand the attention that you can't afford to give your own self. Once the sky is clear again, they shelve you back under "use for emergencies".

Then there is that circle of satellites that come in and out of orbit around you as your attraction grows or diminishes. As the stars favor you and as the days grow fairer. The will polish you, they will make you brighter than you really are. But when all is said and done all they do is blind the true reflection of your own self.

It's true that some people play a temporary role in your life before retiring, but i'll have to hold that true friends don't erode with time nor distance. We drown ourselves in the obligations you speak of- but some of them we add for our own pleasure, friends included. They add to the drain at times yet even it out so nicely at others- and that's what makes it worthwhile!

I see it as a comet.

You're a comet spanning the cosmos... you pick up lots of debris and take them all your life... but often you come upon something with great gravitational pull and it alters the course of your life... but it is too big to carry with you.

Real friends are such people with massive gravity that you actually form your own orbit around them.

And the debris burn away with time
Ahh... if only it was that pinkish :)
Never mind me, I'm just in a little black hole mood tonight.

It ain't pink - what I said is admittedly naive.

I think it is better explained as a three course meal. You have from everything, different portions and you may not eat the whole dish nor like the main dish.

    But you gotta eat!

With posts like these I always find it funny when people start commenting to give their insights on friendships! Hence my elaborate metaphor ;)
Frankly, I find it highly questionable, there will be great people in one's life, but as time passes, so will they. But there's a catch to realizing it. That catch, is time ... lets meet when we're both 60 and see which idea stood the test of time :)

Dude, you're so much fun! I'm enjoing these discussions
Well Q for some types of lets say seasonal friends that is true, but there is this deep connection that lucky people have with their friends, that it will out stand distance and time, you might not have the time or opportunity to see them as much as you once did but they will still be there for ever.only those can you actually call friends.

There is no need to test because Time will indeed triumph and ruin everything.

I don't see my parents have ALLLL their still abroad.

And most definitely I was rose-eyed with some friends until time came along with polish remover.

So I guess friendship is like genetically modified food or laser-eye-surgery. Only time will tell!

You know folks... The exception to this rule are the lucky people who will have less than very few friends that you can count with a single hand. It's just that people drift away at times. Heck married couples drift away while under the same roof sometimes.
Anyway, it's time to cast away the philosophical negativity lens and go back to peachy. It's a wonderful morning and I'm so eager to try my All-wheel drive in the snow :)
