Last night, I was watching an episode of Chuck, the new NBC smash hit show. Where chuck was pursued by some Icelandic agents who are trying to retrieve some confidential data.

So they were running around the Stanford University campus in California, and guess what was on the disk? A list of names for students who have been recruited by the CIA. You have understand now that Stanford is one of the top schools in the US. And the students being recruited were the BEST and the BRIGHTEST in that school.

I started to wonder for a while, reflecting on the state of the General Intelligence Directorate in Jordan.

The very first thing they showed was how excited and committed the recruits ware. And again these are the BEST and the BRIGHTEST!

I don't think anyone in the world can argue about the CIA and how they do their work. We might not agree on the methods, but I doubt anyone disagrees about their efficiency.

Yeah, yeah, someone is going to cite 9/11 or WMD in Iraq and what not. But putting all of these aside (which were obvious to be policy/political failures more than anything)

I know intelligence work relies on loyalty, but it also needs some very bright minds. I'm not saying the GID doesn't do that. I'm just unaware of their policy in recruiting potentials.

Among the CIA recruits were professors, star students and athletes. A good combination of brains and muscles because that's what's needed in my humble opinion.

But the way the level of commitment displayed by the recruits was amazing! And I had to wonder, do we share the same level of commitment to our national institutions? To any job? To anything?

Would we be proud to work for the GID? To serve the society? And I'm not talking about the little police man from Gafgafa or from the rural areas. I'm talking about the elite in the Jordanian society! I don't think I ever heard of any interesting names joining the Army or working for the government.

A bigger issue is that, unless you're being appointed to become a minister, all government positions are really not that attractive! Despite the perks!

Anyway, maybe someday in the near future the concepts of true citizenship, and public service are going to change. Maybe they will end up hatching new people who are so proud of what they're doing. Not choosing to work as a greasy mechanic over governmental positions

    Memories....

Isn't "Chuck" a riot? Where did that girl with the glasses hide her MP-5 submachine gun, I wonder? "Hey, aren't you in Econ with me?" she asks one of the other CIA recruits. I cracked up.

I wanted to join the CIA, at one point. But the background check takes more than a year. And I had to get a job after college, so I wasn't going to wait around. Plus, I had heard from ex-CIA people that depending on what you know, your retirement can be unfortunately quite short before you die of a heart attack, or accidental drowning, or something like that. And if you anger your superior, your career is over. I didn't like the sound of those things.

I still regret not serving my country. I would be as enthusiastic as those recruits on "Chuck." Probably.
Yep, Chuck is AWESOME! I love it, I've been following it religiously. It's sooooo good
As for the chick with the Mp5, my guess would be an under-dress holster? :) Depending on your skills, you can fit a lot in there :)

Nice to see you here Marvin :)
    Whisperer!
I am only hoping that the government agencies start selecting the best and the brightest. And become competitive in salaries and benefits. I think you completely missed that.
But it's ok, why would you be in Saudi Arabia if you were offered a decent job in the government where you got to serve your country AND our carrier!
Gov jobs need a lot more than a good salary and perks ! any one with ambition and brains will die a slow and painful death in a gov job. unless there is a general restructure no one with half a brain will think of working in the gov.
    Isn't that sad Tamara?
An American I went to school with in Jerusalem applied for a job in the CIA. The job description said Arabic and Farsi would be a plus. Out of 40 applicants, he was not just the only one who spoke Arabic, but he spoke it fluently.

They said they can't hire him because he spent over 5 years in the middle east. So he can't pass his background check because they can't take the risk of him having been compromised during that time.

I can't remember if it was Time or Newsweek who wrote an article about it now.
    Very !

The jordanian Intelligence does have an incredibly bright and motivated cadre that is called upon by intelligence agencies world wide to pass information, asses agency structures and carry out operations other agencies are less capable of carrying out. Most probably the only reason one would not be aware f this is because of the secrecy of the issue, unlike the personnel you see cruising around in volvos and "obel vectra" the higher ranks are much more secretive of their job descriptions.
