A lot of people assume I'm very young, like in my teens. It happens all the time. When people find out how old I am, they have difficulty believing it. Although I'm not that old, I'm 21, but people always think I'm much younger. It used to bother me a lot while I was growing up, but now I know it's a blessing to look younger than my real age. I know I'll appreciate it later on in the future. It's fine by me, it's not a big deal or anything, but some times I get offended!
Like today, I was trying on my engagement dress at the tailor and a lady working there said to me "Aaah you're a bride! I thought you were 12!" I was like whaaat?? 12?! 7aram 3alaiki! I know I look younger than 21, bas 12? That's too much. I was so offended. She thought I was a kid.... a kid!!!
I've been thought to be: 16,17,18, and I think once even 14, but never 12! I know I should be happy and take it as a compliment but I just can't get over it. Could it be because I don't wear make up? Or because I'm considered "petite"? That's what I'm told. Actually, I find myself to be average looking for a girl my age. I'm not too thin, I'm average and I do wear eye liner (kol7leh). Ya3ni I definitely don't look like a kid!
I admit, my sister looks older than me, and many times people have mistaken her to be the older sister. But I like the way I am and I'm happy about myself. It can be offensive now, but I'm sure I'll be more grateful about this when I'm older.
Memories....
I'm 23 and when someone first meets me their impression is that I'm much younger. I have a girly voice (which I hate), "baby" face, and I'm short. I get 16, 17, 18 all the time- 18 is usually the common one.
Also it could your personality, this summer we went for my cousin's wedding and saw alot of relatives we haven't seen in a while-everyone thought I was younger then my sis whose actually 6 years younger than me. When I'm in a comfortable environment, like around my cousins, ba7ib athabal kteer and I'm always laughing and I'm always in on the pranks we pull on my grandma and aunts along with the 16 and 17 yr old boys, ya3ni I'm not acting like the "typical" 23 yr old arab girl. My grandmother one time had to pull me aside at a 3azooma and be like "inti mish bint sgheera ma biseer haik" LOOOOOOOOOOL, all the adults would get shocked to hear I already have a masters, "Hadi (pointing to me) la mish ma3'ool"
I take it as a compliment, you should too!
I SOOOOO know how you feel, I am petite too, and always have been, so I have gotten that ALOT for most of my life!!! It doesnt help that I've always been younger than everyone else in my class, so I am really sensitive about it.
But yea, sometimes it can beREALLY annoying...the summer before my last year of univ, I was hanging out at the pool and some lady came up and asked me what grade I was in!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bs yea, you are so right that you will find appreciate it later!! i rarely get it here, since most ppl know I am married and doing my PhD so they assume I am in my early 20s (which I am) bs I LOVE it cuz I get carded everytime I go buy ciggies because nobody every believes I am 21!!
And like asoom said, its also in the way you act...hehe, i am such a kid and I dont care who knows it...theres a time for acting all grown up and respectable, and theres a time to let your hair down and run around like you're still 12 :D
Buy a push up bra.
But now that I'm 31, people think I'm 26. As you get older, this becomes a very good thing. :)
asoom and tinkerbella: I also act like a kid sometimes, but rarely in public. People assume I'm younger judging by my looks. People have also asked me what grade I'm in a few times. After all, it's a bless to look younger than you really are, we're just too young to appreciate it :)
Oriental Arabesque: I'm sure I will :)
