Hmm, let me think. Do I want to poison the environment or chop off the trees?! Oh yeah I forgot, these are recycled paper bags. Right, so I'll only poison the waters! Yeah, that makes sense!!

I remember when I was a little kid, my late grandmother used to go shopping for groceries. And I used to accompany her sometimes when I'm not too busy playing with the kids!

Yes, one of the virtues of having your grandmother live with you, is that you learn things. And she shoulders some of the responsibility off her daughter in law. Allowing my mother to maintain a job AND pursue her higher education while maintaining a house hold with 4 kids.

Anyway, aside from that interjectory statement. My Teta used to be very conscious regarding money issues. "Every penny counts". When that comes from a Palestinian refugee who recalls her parents hauling money in baskets during the Olive oil season. You'll realize that the transformation has been dramatic.

So my Teta, used to firmly hold my hand while she picks the squash, and squeezes the tomatoes are fresh and firm. Once she's done she would grab her little net-bag. And puts things inside it, to save paying 1 piaster for the price of the black plastic bag.

Yes, she was more on the thrifty side, she probably couldn't care less about the environment. But unintentionally that was exactly what she was doing. Not only has she saved the environment. But she has also conserved the resources of the whole nation!

My Grandmother was only one of the huge population who were conscious of the surroundings. Conservation has been a major item on their list of priorities. It has always been. I dare say, I was more proud of Arabs as a nation back then than I am of the new consumer economies spreading through the middle east!

Before anyone opens the subject of, "So, are you Qwaider, doing that when you go shopping?". The simple answer is, No, I'm ashamed to say I'm just like the rest of the consumers out there who end up wasting more resources than they need. And end up polluting and force this world to suffocate and die slowly!

Can you imagine how many tons of plastic would we save if we refrain altogether from using those non-biodegradable damn plastic bags? Can you imagine how many trees we would save if we stopped chopping off trees to make one time use paper bags? Can you imagine how many gallons of water we would save, and keep fresh and less polluted with the residue of the paper recycling process!

Our duty, is to preserve this world to our children. To preserve the world for the future generations. Many might not care. But I for one, do

The waste needs to stop, NOW!

o gosh Q ..if that happened i'd have no bags to put my garbage in..:(
When I lived alone, my apartment was right next to the grocery store, so I had my own cart with a net bag inside, and I would put all the groceries inside, not because the store charged for the bags or because I want to save the env. Just because its simpler, you just dump everything in 1 big bag, and it won't tare.

I'm not planning on having children. I'm one of those people who isn't so concerned about  the environment, but rather only with issues that will affect me during my own lifetime. Selfish eh ? Unfortunately most people are like me but won't admit it.

One of the things that I like about Swedes is that they are very environmental friendly, especially the very old people, it's almost impossible to find an old man or woman who buys plastic bags when shopping.

Most people here just get their own with them or buy special bags that are made out of cloth ( Gmaash :D ) and they keep using them when ever they go shopping.

By the way, I love the user icons you made ^^
There are those recyclable bags that they are trying to have people use instead of those damned plastic bags..

I used to do shopping in Mark Spencer where i could choose two kinds of bags. One is made by recycling wiht green colour and other is made by normal procedures. This is good idea for society where they use sometime million tons of bags. But for our society in jordan , we should provide first food to fill bags then thenk how we need to protect our environment.
Fine, I agree Ahmad. And to provide more food for hungry people. I think we can save a penny or two here and there by using anything that is not single time use.

That would make Jordan environmentally friendly. We keep re-using glass soda bottles , and some go unwashed in between to conserve on the water! [It's the people's imagination though, i'm sure they follow stricter protocols that wouldn't allow for dead bugs to pop up in their bottles, or for them to go unsanitized between different fills, right?]
I think it's a long, hard battle when you're going to start discussing environmental issues. Nobody is concerned because they all have their own priorities and just take the environment for granted. It's not just the middle east, our own officials here slip a comment here and there claiming global warming is bogus. Every little step counts, and goes a long way!
It would be one of the happiest days of my life if I saw this catching up in Jordan.
